The first day of the second Test between the South Africans and Indians saw SA bowlers dominating Indian batters. India’s first innings got over on 202 with some resistance in the middle. Let’s look at what exactly took place in today’s first-day play.
Not an ideal day for Indian batters
With their regular captain, Virat Kohli, out of the match due to back spasm, Indians already had enough on their plate today. However, the Wanderer’s pitch provided a steep bounce to make matters worse. And this was enough to break the opening pair, which was the success key the last time.
After Agarwal returned to the pavilion, looking lethal amongst the openers, Duanne Oliver removed the struggling Pujara-Rahane pair on consecutive deliveries. In the process, he became the second-fastest to grab 50 wickets in terms of balls required (1486). A thick edge to third slip and Rahane justified why he was ignored for the captaincy role today by getting dismissed on a golden duck. The experienced pair is now hanging by the rope.
From the Indian camp, their captain fought from the front. KL Rahul continued his excellent form and smashed a gritty half-century. However, while he received some support from Hanuma Vihari (42 runs partnership off 91 balls), he too had to perish soon at the hands of Rabada. A positive from the Indian batting was Ashwin notching 46 runs off 50 balls, fulfilling his bowling all-rounder role.
SA bowlers dominated the day
It was a successful day for Proteas bowlers, sticking to their game plan and efficiently using the pitch. Marco Jansen was exceptional today. Removing four out of the five double-digit scorers from the Indian squad, Jansen continued to trouble them.
His fellow teammates very well supported Jansen. Oliver, who finally returned to the squad, and Rabada grabbed three wickets each. While Ngidi could not get a wicket today, he made sure to attack and keep the Indian batters in check. Again, a plan well executed by South African bowlers.
What’s in it for Day 2?
Day 1 undoubtedly has South Africa’s name. The pitch favors bowlers, but if South African batters show some intent tomorrow, it will surely put Indians on the back foot. The Indians are already on the spot, with Siraj giving an injury scare. While Shami removed Aiden Markram early, the camp will have to work harder to stay in the game.
