IPL 2021: Using data to look at the Indian fast bowling prospects

The 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League brought into display some great performances especially from the side of some promising youngsters.

It was seen throughout the tournaments how these young minds were dealing against such extreme conditions in UAE and also adapting to it at ease. Some of the great knocks and some of the greatest bowling were seen from these under-caped Heroes.

They are growing and evolving along with the ecosystem and will certainly prove to be major prospects for team India in the coming future. The quality of the game and the type of pressure that they are getting to experience at such an early stage of their careers is something that will prove to be major learning for such young talents of Indian cricket.

In this particular analysis piece, we will look at data of a few emerging and performing young fast bowlers from India playing under different popular franchises under IPL and who have had an impact currently considering performance data from IPL as well as domestic cricket data over the years.

A look at performances in T20s since 2017

Avesh Khan

Considering Twenty20 stats from Cric metric it was found out that Avesh Khan appeared for 29 matches, bowling 107 overs, conceding 850 runs, and most importantly and admirably taking 42 wickets including a fiver and striking at a rate of 15.3 makes him our first pick as one of the most emerging fast bowlers from India.

Arshdeep Singh

Chetan Sakaria

The pacer from Rajasthan Royals has had a decent season this year. The debutant has been spectacularly brilliant with the bowl during his 18 innings of play. He has bowled for 68 overs conceding 493 runs along with taking 24 wickets. He is seen to be striking at a rate of 17.0. The pacer also has a five-wicket haul to his name.

Prasidh Krishna

The young pacer from Karnataka has been playing for Kolkata Knight riders for years now and is a core member of the bowling unit. Krishna has appeared for 35 matches where he has bowled over 127 overs conceding 1172 runs but taking only 30 wickets. He did not have a good season in IPL this year and his strike rate has gone down to 25.5. Still, a season of a bad experience cannot decide the future he’s still an emerging young pacer from India that has a lot of potentials.

Shivam Mavi

Mavi has been affecting the overall performance of KKR for years now. He is seen to be appearing for 26 innings bowling for more than 86 overs,  striking at a rate of 20.7 and taking away 25 wickets for his team. He is surely considered as a promising young fast bowler with a lot of potentials stored within him and is left to be explored.

Kartik Tyagi

The youngster to defend four runs in the final over of a match for Rajasthan Royals this year. Tyagi is one of the promising youngsters with the bowl. Tyagi appeared for only four innings with the bowl for the season 2021. However, he has appeared for 14 innings, bowling more than 52 overs and conceding 491 runs, and also taking 13 wickets. He is seen to be striking at a rate of 24.1.

Handling pressure – an issue for the youngsters?

The IPL 2021 gave us an overview of the capabilities of what these young minds can do with the ball. For a better understanding of how the young minds handle the pressure, we’ve considered and compared data of wickets taken towards the final overs of a T20 game.

Observing and comparing the graph below it can be seen how the wicket-taking abilities for each player towards the end of the match. Considering wickets taken while bowling during the 16th-20th over we found out that Avesh Khan had his most miraculous season with the bowl this year and striking highest towards the end of his overs gives us a hint of his pressure bowling.

While Prasidh Krishna had his best-of-the-death bowling experience in the year 2018 and after that he’s seen to be struggling with the bowl but had a decent season this year.

Arshdeep Singh has been improving his presence with the bowl especially towards the death spells. Also, Mavi, Tyagi, and Sakaria have been doing pretty well.

Conclusion

Each edition of the IPL provides us with a chance to watch some of the lesser-known Indian cricketers and enables us to go up against a class of players that have been incredible in their brief careers so far.
