IPL 2023: What are the Punjab Kings chances of qualifying for the tournament?

Over the years in the Tata IPL’s history, Punjab Kings as a team has consistently underperformed and disappointed fans. They may have performed below expectations in part due to their management and player rotations, which are ongoing. The only time the Punjab Kings have made it to the finals in the 14 seasons of the Tata IPL so far was in 2014 when they finished as runners-up to the Kolkata Knight Riders in what was also their best IPL season to date. At the time, George Bailey served as captain.

Returning to the 15th season of the Tata IPL in 2023, the Punjab Kings have the most captains (14) to head a franchise since the league’s inception. They fired Mayank Agarwal, their captain from the previous season in 2022. This meant they had to pick a new captain, Shikhar Dhawan. Prior to that season, the team’s then-captain KL Rahul, who was also one of their top performers alongside Mayank Agarwal, decided to part ways with the team in order to embark on a new journey with a new franchise from Lucknow, named the Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG), where he took the captaincy.

Team-wise Ranking by Strike Rate

Data till Match 47

The Punjab Kings have scored their runs in the first ten games at a strike rate of 145.62 and an average of slightly over 24 (24.32). When it comes to using the bat to generate runs for his team, their new captain Shikhar Dhawan has taken the initiative. The Punjab Kings had the fifth-best strike rate in terms of the total effect produced among all the other teams competing in the event. It turns out that they have also scored the most runs (1727 runs), the most of any side in the current Tata IPL season, in the 10 innings that they have played.

Punjab Kings Playoffs Qualification Scenario

They made a great start to the season, winning their first two games in a row. However, after that, they mysteriously discovered that it was difficult for them to win two straight games once more. Since they have only won five of their first ten games or 50% of them, they are now in the bottom part of the points standings. In order to have a chance of entering the playoffs (using 16 points as the cut-off to qualify), they must win at least three of their final four games. This presents them with an uphill struggle.

Conclusion

In the IPL’s first season, back in 2008, the Punjab Kings only made it as far as the semifinals, when they lost to the Chennai Super Kings. Prior to the 2014 season, they had never been able to advance that far in the competition. In order to guarantee their place in the playoffs in the current Tata IPL 2023, the Punjab Kings will need to rise up as a group and perform well as a squad.
