IPL 2023: Lord Shardul and Rinku Singh lead one of the best comebacks in IPL history for the Knight Riders.

The Tata IPL made a comeback to Eden Gardens after a long hiatus, much to the delight of the fans. The home team, Kolkata Knight Riders, and their supporters were hoping for a thrilling game and a win for the home team. The match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore turned out to be a historic and thrilling encounter, with both the fans and players enjoying every moment.

Faf Du Plessis, the captain of RCB, won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping that the due factor would work in their favour later in the game. RCB’s decision proved to be a wise one as they quickly put KKR on the back foot, claiming half of their wickets in quick succession. The situation looked bleak for KKR, but then “Lord Shardul,” as Shardul Thakur is known, entered the crease and with Rinku Singh, showcased his batting prowess to lead KKR to a match-winning total of over 200 runs. RCB was left stunned at the halfway point of the game.

Did RCB miss the spin trick while bowling?

The Eden Gardens surface offered advantages for pacers, especially during the powerplay, allowing them to extract swing and seam off the pitch. However, KKR’s struggles against the seamers were evident as they lost 57% of their wickets while scoring 128 runs off 78 balls at an average of 10 runs per over. On the other hand, RCB faced the pacers during their chase, had a similar scoring rate, but lost only 1 wicket.

The difference in the two teams’ performance was due to their respective spin strategies. KKR’s run rate against spin decreased significantly, scoring only 56 runs at 8 runs per over while losing 3 wickets. In contrast, Nitesh Rana, the KKR captain, adopted a spin-heavy approach against RCB spinners after figuring out how to handle them. RCB, although scoring slightly over 5 runs per over against the spinners, lost 90% of their wickets.

The Saviors, Lord Shardul-Rinku

It was all about Lord Shardul and Rinku’s show, which enabled KKR to put on a spirited performance with the ball before the spinners caused all the mayhem. The pair put together a potentially game-saving partnership that ultimately turned out to be the match-winning partnership of 103 runs from just the 47 balls (Shardul 63 off 26 and Rinku 34 off 21), taking KKR to a match-winning total and shocking the RCB camp just when they were down and out at 89 for the loss of five wickets and all the signs pointed towards a crushing defeat.

With the addition of Shardul Thakur, the Knight Riders’ batting performance against spin bowling saw a huge adjustment. Prior to Shardul’s entry, KKR only managed to score 39 runs off 30 balls against spin with a strike rate of 130 throughout the innings. Yet, KKR scored 27 runs off just 12 balls at an astounding strike rate of 225 in the innings where Shardul was playing against spin. This shows that Shardul’s addition to the team significantly improved KKR’s batting performance against spin bowling, and his abilities and ability were important in this development.

Conclusion

The numbers amply support Shardul Thakur’s contribution, as his presence significantly improved KKR’s batting performance against spin. The batting unit will need to step up and take it upon themselves to do the majority of the scoring and give their bowlers something to bowl at if they are to stand a chance of making the playoffs, despite the fact that KKR ultimately controlled the game due to some individual performances against RCB.
