IPL 2023: Injury-prone talent Washington Sundar ruled out of the tournament.

When Washington Sundar, age 23, was given the chance to participate in a Test Match in Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020–21, he performed admirably. He and a few other players were the net bowlers on that trip when it began, but for the fourth and final test of the series, practically all of the net bowlers were called up to the squad because the senior players were unavailable due to injuries. In the fourth test match against Australia, Washington Sundar was one of the few other net players making their debut, and he put on a strong performance with both the bat and the ball.

Since that series, he has won over everyone with his performances in any opportunities that have presented themselves for him to represent Team India. Additionally, he has been sidelined due to the injuries he had to endure. He played the first part of the season with Sunrisers Hyderabad but has since been ruled out of the Tata IPL 2023 with a hamstring injury. Prior to getting hurt, he had his greatest game of the year so far, taking 3 wickets in an over and coming dangerously close to completing an epic run chase against the Delhi Capitals.

Opponent-wise Sunder’s bowling performances since 2021

He has played in just 15 IPL games over the last three years as a result of missing many games owing to injuries. In the 40 balls he has bowled against them over the course of two games, he has merely given out 37 runs with an economy of under 6 per over and an average of 18.5.

With an economy of less than 7 (6.86), he also succeeded in keeping the batters for the defending champion Gujarat Titans very quiet. He has given up 79 runs at a rate of almost 13 runs per over, which has allowed the Rajasthan Royals to completely destroy him. Overall, he has bowled over 46 overs across the 15 innings, taking up 9 wickets at a little higher economy of just over 8 runs per over.

Washington Sunder has already shown glimpses of his match-winning skills while playing for India across all forms, and if he can maintain his current level of fitness and avoid injuries, he would be a valuable asset to whichever team he plays for. He can also be a match-winner for India. SRH currently holds the ninth spot in the standings after seven games, with two victories and five defeats. Markram acknowledged that the team’s situation hasn’t been helped by frequent batting order changes.
