Securing a historic victory over the Black Caps by crushing the hosts by eight wickets, the Tigers have got off to a great start to the new year. They defeated the Black Caps and registered their first win in New Zealand on Day 5 of the opening Test at Mount Maunganui.

After the overnight score of 147/5, the hosts managed to add just 22 runs on the last day. The Tigers were left with just 40 runs to script a historic win.

Bangladesh firstly celebrated catching Kyle Jamieson on Day 5, while the man-on-fire with the ball, Ebadot Hossain, sent back Ross Taylor. Post that, wickets kept falling at one end. By dismissing Taylor, Ebadot completed his maiden five-wicket haul.

Chasing a small target of 40 runs, Bangladesh lost Shadman Islam early, which put on some pressure down the order. A gritty partnership by the Tiger’s captain, Mominul Haque, and Najmul Hossain Shanto, helped them get closer to the victory. Shanto, who was out for 17, made sure that they needed only six runs to win, while Mushfiqur Rahim ensured that there were no further hiccups.

Two years back, the Tigers were not playing much Test cricket. This win in away conditions will surely boost up their confidence to do well in unfamiliar conditions. They also haven’t won any of their previous 43 encounters in New Zealand across formats and without Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, and recently retired Mahmadullah, they managed to clinch this famous victory over the Black Caps.

Dismissing New Zealand for 169 was a major task in the second innings, with Ebadot Hossain’s extraordinary piece of bowling bagging career-best figures of 6/46, winning the ‘Player-of-the-Match’ title.

Kickstarting Test cricket in 2022, Bangladesh ended New Zealand’s winning run of 17 matches in their backyard. The ingredients of this maiden win were the overall team performance, especially with the ball. The bowlers made sure to take the advantage of the pitch to their benefit. Using the moisture in the pitch and bowling tighter line and length was one of the key ingredients for this win, while the batters made sure of contributing runs to the overall scores.
